TC30 Omni Microphones

These are unlike other microphones in several respects, most especially in the way they image. Whereas they have a very coherent phase response and are even more omni than most omnis, Earthworks microphones image extremely well, especially for acoustic guitar, drum overheads, piano and small ensembles. Even as closely spaced pairs (X/Y, crossed or near coincident), they image well. Recently we recorded a guy singing and playing an acoustic guitar at the same time. There was a minimal amount of spill to the TC30 from his voice.

Furthermore, they do not exhibit the bass proximity effect so you can position them as close as you dare to a source without boominess. This allows you to apply the inverse square law to great effect when isolation is desired. When positioned closely the separation available is tremendous and yet when used at a distance the TC30 is one of the most natural room mics we have heard. Additionally, although they are flat and accurate to below 9Hz and deliver startling bass performance, they have almost no handling noise.
